My kid likes it, and that is the point of these books. I thought it left a lot to be desired. A magical gorilla totes this girl to the zoo because she loves gorillas. When they get there it mentions that she thought the primates were beautiful but "looked sad". Not sad enough apparently, her and the magic gorilla leave the sad looking primates behind - leave the zoo - grab a bite to eat - have a quick dance on the lawn outside her house - she goes to sleep - wakes up to a stuffed gorilla and then goes to the zoo with her father (who was "always too busy" working to take her). No real story - no noticeable lesson. Illustrations were nicely done.

This thoughtful beautifully book was simple enough to please my two-year old with many details that she's likely to appreciate a few years later. After about 50 readings I'm not sick of it yet.
lovely little story about a girl who loves gorillas and is dissapointed with her relationship with her father who has little time for her. She receives a toy gorilla for her birthday and through her imagination one night while sleeping, he becomes real and takes her to the zoo, the one place she has asked her father to go. By the tihe next morning, she is back in bed with her toy gorilla next to her.
I was so entranced by the illustrations it took quite a while to get through this book but I finally did and was as awed by the story as I was by the illustrations, what a fantastic book. A lonely neglected little girl is rescued by her toy gorilla who takes her on a wonderful journey, brings her safely back, and we see a happy ending as her father shows her how much he really loves her.
A great classic story! Our 2 1/2-year-old grandson loves it. The drawings are great! A little sad in parts, but has a happy ending.
Gorilla by Anthony Browne is a delightful read. Both adults and children will love it. And it is a great book to read aloud. The young girl (the main character) loves gorillas and has always wanted to go to the zoo and see an real gorilla, but her father never seems to have time. But when her father gives her a small toy gorilla for her birthday, something magical happens... Be sure and study every drawing and panel in this book carefully when you read it--the delightful, magical images will enchant and surprise you!
Lovely book, artfully moves between fantasy and reality. Id say it's a sad story about a child who longs for her father's attention, but he is too busy to spend time with her. She finds comfort in a toy gorilla who does what her father doesn't. The story ends on a hopeful note, and the sad parts are not portrayed as tragedies, still it's food for thought for children and adults ... My 3 year old loves it, and so do I.
Browne's gifts for evoking empathy, imagination, reflection, and fierce wonderings about things that really matter, appeal to anyone who gets to interact with the text and illustrations in his books. Gorilla is a story that whispers feelings of isolation and feelings of being lonely or sad. But it also narrates an understanding of hope and possibilities for a freshness that any dream, emotion, or experience can offer one at any moment. The illustrations while seamlessly support the text, also offer a narrative of their own, providing ample opportunity to engage in discourse about topics ranging from animals in captivity to social class and cultivation of childhood. Gorilla can be read to the youngest of children, leading to celebrating places they would like to visit and about animals they especially admire and love and want to know more about. This is a book that you come back to many times, and with every new audience or reread of your own, you will find something else to connect to and think about. A picture book like this on your child's book shelf, says that you believe your child is intelligent and curious, and deserves books that his friends want you to read to them when they come visit! As far as school and public libraries...they should invest in every Anthony Browne book they can get their hands on. So happy to finally see his books being more accessible in the States. They are works of art.
