In fair disclaimer, this book was pretty much tailor-made for me. Jonathan Dunne would have really had to screw this idea up to get anything less than 5 stars out of me.With that out of the way, I love this book. And Mick. And Sinbad. And Sammy Davis Jr. And Gearoid. And Smiler too (who doesn't love itineraries?!)
We meet our heroes on a life-changing day, and while it does take a little while to get from the life-altering mistake to the Big Adventure, it feels right that it should: the feelings (all the feels, really) are necessary to justify the good guys their slightly illegal road (field?) trip. I was anxious to start the Adventure, and wish we readers had more Adventure-time with Mick and Sinbad (and Gearoid and Sammy), but I get why we needed the slightly extended into.
Their hero journey through Ireland is amazing, and one that would make Bill Moyers proud. I want "the lost adventures" sequel where we get to spend more time with them on the run/free.
This book was so sad (main character has Alzheimer's, there is NO way around this if the author is halfway decent and unfortunately for my eyes, Jonathan Dunne is fullway awesome), so much fun (there is an elephant jailbreak forgodssake), and very suspenseful...I really could only imagine one way this was going to end (and lucky for me and this reading, I was wrong).
Basically, it has everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... or at least 7 of these, loosely speaking. And it is really well written to boot! Slight deus ex machina moment...but it really does not detract.

Hide the Elephant eBook Jonathan Dunne Reviews
This story is lovely and sweet. But, the Alzheimer's portion of it is not realistic, at least not that I have seen my mom go through. Regardless, the story is very nice and will bring a smile to every reader.
This was another great book by this author. I loved how he developed his characters so well and I am looking forward to reading more of his work. I enjoyed how the story became more complex for the main character and how wonderfully he was able to resolve some of the difficulties he had to face. I think I will remember this story for some time to come, despite having finished it a couple of weeks ago, it is all still very much in my mind, so well done to this author once again.
This is a beautiful story about love and last chances. It also illustrates a very scary disease, Alzheimer's. It does so with humor and dignity. Get ready to laugh and cry as you go on the run with Nick and Sinbad.
A Zookeeper, Mick Munroe is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. He loves his job and the elephants he cares for so he keeps his disease secret. Eventually, his mistakes and forgetfulness catch up with him and he loses his job.
Mick can't bear being without his elephant, Sinbad. One night he takes Sinbad from the zoo and the two of them find adventure.
This book is as delightful as it is sad. I'm glad I read it.
I enjoyed the idea of the person with Alzheimers, and the overall plot of stealing the elephant and the resulting adventures, and even having a somewhat happy ending. What I found a little hard to accept would be the fact that someone whose Alzheimer's is getting progressively worse being able to continually make sense in his journaling. That's why only 3 stars.
Loved the story! What a great adventure. Did not like all of the foul language. The perspective of the book and Mic constantly referring to the reader was a little off putting. I didn't need to be an active participant in the story. I kept reading because you feel for Mic and his elephant and you want them to have a happy ending.
This a beautifully written, strangely moving novel. Mick the zookeeper and Sinbad the elephant are on the run, and in the process they are magically transformed into heroes of mythical proportions.
This book has quite a bit of hidden depth, but it is also a great read and moves along quite quickly. I did agree with another reviewer that the ending seemed somewhat contrived. But I couldn't think of a different ending that would satisfy without being just too sad, especially after I spent all that time rooting for Nick and Sinbad. So I have to give the author extra credit for nicely wrapping up a difficult situation.
